You're not a control freak
(I promise...)
Hey, It's Ramon —
When Raquel and I first met… I wouldn't let her get close to me.
I'd tell her I wasn't looking for a girlfriend. I had these "rules." I'd avoid the hard conversations.
I threw up all these invisible barriers — and I told myself they were about freedom. About not needing anyone.
They weren't.
They were about control.
I wasn't pushing her away because I didn't want her.
I was pushing her away because I wanted her so much that letting her all the way in felt dangerous.
If I stayed in control of the distance… she could never really hurt me.
So I kept one foot out the door at all times. And I called it independence.
Here's why I'm telling you this.
We hear "control freak" and we picture someone reloading the dishwasher, rereading the email five times, micromanaging everybody.
And sure, sometimes it looks like that.
But a lot of the time, control is quieter.
It's keeping one foot out the door. It's "I've got it, I'm fine." It's never quite letting people all the way in.
It's staying just busy enough, just guarded enough, to never have to feel something you don't want to feel.
Because that's what control actually is.
It was never about the dishwasher, or the distance, or the rules.
It's about outrunning a feeling.
The reason you do it isn't because something's wrong with you.
It's because somewhere along the way, your nervous system learned that staying in control was how you stayed safe.
If things felt unsteady early on — a home you had to read carefully, love that felt conditional, a world where letting your guard down didn't feel safe — your nervous system figured something out fast:
"When I stay in control… I'm safe. When I let go… I'm not."
So you got good at it. And it worked. It protected you.
The problem is, your body never got the memo that the danger passed.
So now, with a good life and people who love you, your nervous system is still running that same old program — gripping, guarding, keeping one foot out the door — defending you from something that ended a long time ago.
That's why "just let go" has never worked for you.
You can't think your way out of it. You can't willpower your way out of it. Because it was never a thinking problem.
It's a safety problem.
And a nervous system that learned to be scared… can learn to feel safe again. That's the whole game.
I went deep on all of this in my newest video — including the part almost nobody talks about: why letting go can feel like genuine panic, and what actually teaches your body it's finally safe to loosen the grip.
If you've ever wondered why you can't just relax like everyone keeps telling you to — this one's for you :)
